Kyle H.

Learner, GED Graduate

At the start of 2018, I never expected to begin studying toward the GED and pass all 5 tests in a mere 4 months! I left the school system in grade 7 for family reasons. I always planned to write the GED as soon as I was old enough.

Once I started working, I put off joining a class or taking the GED test out of fear. One of my coworkers suggested we try a GED class. We reached out to the Halifax Community Learning Network and were accepted into the class in Spryfield. For both of us, this meant attending morning classes after working a long night shift at McDonald’s. I felt ready to try Social Studies at NSCC Leeds St. in March and passed the test! This gave me the confidence to study toward the other four tests in April. With a full-time job and lots of extra shifts, I’m not sure how I managed to fit school work in but I found a way.

I wrote and passed the final four GED tests in April and on May 2nd, my GED diploma arrived in the mail. It was official: I had completed high school in 4 months and graduated at age 20. Now I need to decide where to go from here. I will likely work this year and look into NSCC programs for 2019.

I just wanted to say thank you to the HCLN for giving me the opportunity and support to help pass my GED. It’s changed my life and I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you to Denise and everyone involved, you’re all wonderful. My journey has just begun.
